In September of 1971 Earl and Jim Smith opened for business in Rensselaer Indiana in the old F.O. Hershman John Deere building on Walnut Street as a Tractor Supply Franchise Store.  We soon out grew our facility and moved to a new 10,000 sq ft building at our present location on the north side of Rensselaer in 1976.  In 1978 another 5,000 sq. ft. was added to our building.  June of 1981 saw another addition as Don and Earl Smith opened for business in the old Five Star Grocery Store in Knox Indiana.  A 1,000 sq. ft. Radio Shack was opened inside of the Smith Farm Store in Knox in 1991. In 2001 we saw yet another addition to our family; we purchased an Ace Hardware store in Plymouth Indiana.  This store goes by Smith’s Ace Hardware and also Smith Farm Store.  A year later there was yet another addition to the family we opened our fourth store in Rochester Indiana.  This store opened as a new store with 12,600 sq ft and they are busting at the seams.  The latest addition came in December of 2006 when Don and Kim opened an Internet store.  Our first Christmas season was a success as our Internet store established new customers in 23 states and inquiries from as far away as Great Brittan.  Our Internet store has since grown and we’re adding new things all the time.  

Smith Farm Store is truly a locally owned and operated company. All of the sons and the daughter of Earl Smith have worked in the stores at one time in their lives. The two sons continue to work for their father. All of the Grandchildren who have come of age have also worked at the stores. All three of Jim's children have worked in the stores and Cassie continues to work for the Rensselaer store.   So far three of Dons four children have worked in the stores.  Brock is just beginning his time in the family business and Kim continues to work for the Internet store.
